Intrinsic Load Assessment
Question: Is the inherent difficulty appropriate for your learners' expertise level?
Too Low Indicators:
Learners report content is "basic" or "review"
High completion rates but no behavior change
Learners multi-task during training sessions
Post-training assessments show learners already knew most content
Too High Indicators:
High dropout rates or help desk calls
Learners report feeling overwhelmed or confused
Practice exercises consistently produce poor results
Learners avoid using skills post-training
Just Right Indicators:
Learners report feeling appropriately challenged
Gradual improvement throughout practice activities
Confident skill application in workplace contexts
Sustained performance over time
Quick Test: Can learners articulate the main concept in their own words after the exposure phase? If not, intrinsic load may be too high. If they can explain concepts beyond what you taught, it may be too low.
Extraneous Load Detection
Question: What's competing for mental attention that doesn't support learning objectives?
Common Sources of Extraneous Load:
Decorative graphics that don't illustrate concepts
Background music during cognitive tasks
Complex navigation requiring conscious thought
Competing visual elements on the same screen
Unclear instructions that force learners to guess
Irrelevant information "for context"
Overly complex branching scenarios
The Elimination Test: Remove any element that doesn't directly support the learning objective. Does the course still work? If yes, you found extraneous load. If removing it breaks the learning experience, it was serving a necessary function.
The Attention Test: Track where learners look during key learning moments. Are they focusing on learning-relevant elements or getting distracted by design features?
Germane Load Optimization
Question: Are learners building transferable mental models through productive cognitive effort?
Effective Germane Load:
Practice scenarios that require applying principles to novel situations
Reflection prompts that connect new learning to prior knowledge
Progressive challenges that build complexity systematically
Analysis of patterns across different applications
Planning how to adapt frameworks to specific contexts
Ineffective Germane Load:
Busy work that doesn't build understanding
Reflection questions without clear connection to learning objectives
Practice that only rehearses memorized procedures
Activities that feel productive but don't improve transfer
Transfer Test: Can learners adapt what they've learned to a novel situation they haven't practiced? This is the ultimate measure of germane load effectiveness.
The Three-Phase Implementation Checklist
Based on the Exposure-Action-Insight framework I've refined through multiple implementations, here's your systematic design approach:
Phase 1: Exposure Design
Chunk Information: Present concepts in 3-7 item groups to respect working memory limits
Provide Worked Examples: Show complete solutions before asking for independent practice
